SEO Keywords - The Trick to Enhancing Your Online Content
Published on 25th February, 2011 09:03am

If you're happy with the content on your website, but you're just not getting the hits you thought you would, it could be time to optimise your content for the search engines.

SEO keywords are one of the most important considerations when factoring in SEO for your website and need to be carefully researched and applied. Search engines crawl the web looking for relevant text that they can use to index your site and return it to those looking for your services online. Search engines only recognise text and this is a good point to remember. If your website contains a lot of images, Flash content or symbols, the search engines will merrily skip by and totally ignore these objects.

Content is king when it comes to search engine rankings and together with other elements such as backlinks you can really improve your search engine position with the right SEO keywords applied to your site. But how do you find the right keywords? Google has a keyword search tool that is very helpful and will help you to find the most popular keywords that people are entering when looking for your type of service or products. Some of the search terms may surprise you, but when used correctly on your website will help you to attract more targeted traffic. You should aim to choose a handful of keywords and apply them so they are mentioned throughout your content. A good rule of thumb is to use 1-3 relevant keywords on each of your pages.

Choose those keywords that are relevant to your website. For example, if you own a dog grooming parlour in Bristol, you might choose keywords such as ‘dog grooming bristol’ or ‘dog grooming parlour Bristol’. It’s always a good idea to include local keywords so that your local customers can find you. If you only trade online you may not need to worry about this factor and can go for more generic keywords.

Don’t litter your content with SEO keywords as this is a sure way to put your visitors off and can also confuse the search engines stopping them from indexing your website effectively. Put the keywords in your headings and write intelligent and engaging content around your keywords so that it’s not immediately obvious. You can also add keywords to the metadata of your pages as search engines will also index this information.
Whilst working with SEO keywords may sound simple it actually requires constant attention to ensure you stay one step ahead of your competitors especially if their site has been optimised too.
