Power to the Backlinks!

Find out more about the power of backlinks and why they are so important to your search engine ranking...

It’s common knowledge that Google uses a range of algorithms to work out a website page’s rank when searched for. Google claims to use at least 100 different ranking methods and indeed their ranking methods are quite complex and some a closely guarded secret. This is obviously the secret of Google’s success and they have been the most popular search engine for quite some time now.

Search engine optimisation service provider, Freelance SEO Bristol, knows just how important some SEO techniques are, especially the effect of inbound links. Now, a lot is said about on-page SEO, that is the optimisation of your web pages, content and web page components, but little is mentioned about off-page SEO – those little things that go on in the background, but which are so important to your search engine page ranking.

Inbound links are links on another web page which link back to your website. The more high quality links you have linking back to you the more credence and relevance the search engines give to your website. If you have more links linking back to you from websites relevant to your business type then that’s even better! Google looks for pages that are of a high quality. After all, it’s in their best interests to return pages that are of use to their users rather than pages containing spam or irrelevant information.

When it comes to choosing a search engine optimisation search, inbound links are very powerful. Google’s index consists of two indexes – the short index and the long index. The short index is also nicknamed ‘the fancy hits’ index and is used to store the words in link texts which point to a particular page, the words contained in the title of the page, and a number of other components. The long index is used to store all the words in the content of the page.

When a search query is run through Google, the search engine first tries to retrieve results from the short index and if they can’t get enough results there they will move onto the long index. That’s why it’s so important to optimise the meta data and page titles with relevant keywords and to make sure you have plenty of backlinks pointing back to your website. If the search engines can get enough results from the short index they won’t even bother checking the content in the long index.
