There are many factors that go towards making a successful search engine optimisation campaign. That’s a tough one, but your website architecture and content plays a huge role in your success. Your website is often the first port of call for your customers and gives them the first impression they will ever have of your products, services or business image. The content on your site needs to be engaging and relevant to both your visitors and the search engines trawling the web for relevant content to return to web users. Your website architecture needs to be intuitive so that your visitors can find their way around and the search engines also need to be able to index each of your pages easily in order to get you better rankings. Next up would have to be keyword research and how you go about using those keywords. Keywords really go hand in hand with website architecture. It’s fine to build a website, but if you haven’t factored in keywords you’ll receive traffic that is untargeted that gives very poor results. There are many facets to keyword research, but when you are first designing your website you only need to focus on the basic keywords that are relevant to your business or products. You can dig deeper later on when you start to fully optimise your website. This process takes time and you’ll want to do it over a matter of months, years even, rather than days.
The search engines don’t index your entire website, they index each individual page so it’s really important to treat each page as a separate entity. Pay close attention to the content, keywords, page titles and metadata and try to ensure your keywords are included everywhere you can.
The content on your web pages should be optimised with the relevant keywords and a good rule of thumb is to use 1-3 keywords on each page and ensure that your content remains lively, relevant and not simply littered with keywords. You want to give your visitors a good experience and give them information that will encourage them to buy from you. Web users are becoming more and more switched on to spam and if they think you are trying to dupe or manipulate them they will be off like a shot never to return.
